The recall and traceability workshops will be the most comprehensive ever undertaken for the Canadian packaging industry, says PAC government relations director Larry Dworkin.
They are not only for PAC - The Packaging Association members, but also for members of provincial food processing and agriculture organizations and provincial agriculture representatives.
The workshops will be followed up in November by mock recall and traceability field trials of the entire packaging supply chain that will involve firms from across Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., Dworkin says,
"We hope to work with close to 100 – 200 food retailers, food processors, packaging converters, suppliers and government agencies to make sure this project will provide our members with the experience and type of due diligence needed to be successful in this type of undertaking."
"Most recall and traceability initiatives carried out by the food sector have not included the packaging or transportation sectors. Secondly, many, if not most, Canadian packaging converters do not have a comprehensive recall and traceability program in place. Many also are not aware of where some food safety issues could occur in their operations."
