Press Release - February 24, 2010 - Toronto, ON, Canada

Fast Tracking Sustainable Innovation at the PAC Green Den – A great Success!

In a addition to public presentations to a boisterous packaging community, eighteen Sustainability Innovators met privately with eight of Canada’s leading Retailers and Brand Owners; Loblaw, Sobeys, Walmart, Kraft, Maple Leaf Foods, Molson Coors, Tim Hortons and United Purchasing Group of Canada (KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut).

Norampac’s NorShield – Wax Replacement Technology for corrugated liners and medium were voted number one People’s Choice Best of Show by an enthusiastic audience. The NorShield box is designed for the packaging of vegetables, meat and fish. It is water resistant and retains its form and rigidity while still being recyclable and repulpable. The linerboard is made from 100% recycled fibre. NorShield is also lighter than tradition wax boxes resulting in lower transportation costs.

Conwed won second place with their Reuseable Produce Bags, and Hood Packaging won third place with EB1 – Economical Bio-friendly Flexible Packaging.

Keynote Speaker, Tom Szaky, Founder & CEO of TerraCycle, enthralled the audience by rethinking the idea of garbage. He then joined Industry Expert Panellists Glenda Gies from Waste Diversion Ontario and Daniel Normandin of LeCIRAIG – LCA Institute in giving valuable constructive feedback to each Innovator.
