Disruptors on our Radar: FLEXI-HEX, A Friendlier Company
Session Date: Wednesday June 2, 2021
Session Time: 2 PM New York | 7 PM London | 11 AM Los Angeles
This session will showcase A Friendlier Company and Flexi-Hex, and their disruptive packaging innovations.
Because the planet isn’t single use.
Recent graduates of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Jacquie and Kayli have launched A Friendlier Company, tackling reuse in foodservice. While abroad in Sweden during their 3rd year, they were introduced to a culture filled with minimalism and environmental sustainability. Returning home, they started questioning North American culture and waste habits, compelling them to find a way to help consumers live more purposeful lives.
After graduation, they were inspired to do something impactful – refusing to work in a world where the climate crisis is not a priority. A Friendlier Company was born, offering reusable takeout containers to restaurants, and contributing to a circular economy.

See Packaging Differently
Session Date: Wednesday June 9, 2021
Session Time: 10 AM New York | 3 PM London | 7 AM Los Angeles
Join Kellogg’s, Procter & Gamble and the Royal National Institute of Blind People on a journey that is creating a new world of packaging for blind and partially sighted people. Hear the story behind two inclusive packages that won PAC Global Leadership Awards.
To honour World Sight Day in 2019, Herbal Essences announced a new initiative aimed at making shampoo and conditioner packaging more accessible for blind and partially sighted consumers. This innovation was spearheaded by Sumaira “Sam” Latif, P&G’s Accessibility Leader, who has been with the company for over 18 years and is herself blind.
In 2020 for World Sight Day, RNIB partnered with Kellogg’s UK to produce accessible information on cereal boxes for blind and partially sighted people. The boxes use NaviLens technology (Apple Store, Google Play) to allow a smartphone to detect and playback labelling and allergen information to shoppers.

Digitalization, Recycling, Circularity: The New Paradigm for Packaging with Digimarc, PACCOR & SGK EMEA
Session Date: Wednesday June 9, 2021
Session Time: 10 AM New York | 3 PM London | 7 AM Los Angeles
Today’s supply chains and focus on the environment are putting pressure on packaging to serve beyond its traditional role of containment, protection, convenience and communication. ‘Responsible packaging’ is the new criteria by which packaging will be judged and play its part in our young century.
We can meet this challenge to make packaging more responsible by giving packaging ‘intelligence,’ which can take various forms and implementations. One of the most promising is that of digital watermarking, in which digitalization turns packaging into Internet-of-Things (IoT) objects, linked in real time to the cloud and virtually unlimited data.
This session will explore current and proposed use cases of digital watermarking with Digimarc, PACCOR and SGK EMEA. The potential benefits are considerable, ranging from supply chain efficiencies, to consumer engagement, to the circular economy by increasing the efficiency of recycling and reducing the impact of plastics to our planet through giving packaging a Digital Recycling Passport.
Also addressed in this panel discussion will be an update on the role of digital watermarking in the HolyGrail 2.0 initiative for a harmonized approach to the detection of plastics in waste streams, facilitated by AIM, the European Brands Association.

Refill Revolution: The Walmart & Algramo Alliance
Session Date: Wednesday June 9, 2021
Session Time: 2 PM New York | 7 PM London | 11 AM Los Angeles
Walmart has partnered with Chilean start-up Algramo to address plastic waste with smart packaging, enabling consumers to “pay for the product, not the packaging”.
It is expected that this 4 month pilot project will help take 3,850 single-use plastic containers out of circulation, helping Walmart in their commitment to a circular economy while saving money for Chileans and at the same time.
To ensure the operation of this initiative, customers will receive rechargeable smart packaging that contains a chip inside that allows them to monitor the purchase, manage future recharges and payments more efficiently, and understand their environmental impact.
